HEY MOM & DAD: SCHOOL’S OUT!

by granger whitelaw

For our kids this is a wonderful statement. It’s the end of another school year filled with homework, tests, sports, friends and bullies, teachers and advisors.

For parents these can be the four scariest words of the year, because they are followed with – ‘oh my, now what do we do with them’?

Seriously, summer is a great time of year to plan a great family vacation or just carve out some quality time with your kids, extended families and take some time to reconnect. It’s also the time of year when weddings are in abundance and parties under the moonlight are in full swing. I have two wedding coming up , on for my  brother-in-law and then my one of my best friends, both getting married in the next 30 days. I’m looking forward to seeing all of my in-laws, they are wonderful people and I know both events will be memories for a lifetime. The best part – I get to throw the bachelor party for Stephen!

But wait, that statement is real, ‘oh my, now what do we do with them’? “Them” being the 4 kids in my household, or the 2, 3 or 4 looking at you right now in yours. I mean, we all have jobs, commitments and bills to pay – but they need to be entertained. In my house, our biggest fight is keeping them off all of the electronics like Facebook, iPhones and XBOX (but hey, it if works….?? Tempting no?). So here is what our plans are – subject to change of course.

My oldest, Granger, is recording his next album for SIX VOLT and has been chosen to play in the top Lacrosse league in the North East for thesummer. Sounds like he is well placed, with the exception of playing games from Cape Cod to Maryland – his Mom better get the car tuned up,hahahhahaha! My daughter Lili will be working and Sailing at our local Boat club and riding her bike to see friends. Lili is pretty amazing all around, always planning something and the most creative girl I know. And Bam Bam (my youngest son), well, he is going to Culver! Yes! Another one of the family at Culver Naval Academy – following in Dad’s footsteps.  He does not know it yet, but he is about to have the time of his life!!

So for me it will be a bit of travel, two weddings, a few stolen hours with the kids between their activities and a lot of working launching a new business that is sure to give me a few more gray hairs. My wife leaves for a month to see her folks and family back on the West coast and I will miss them terribly, but a little break now and then isn’t bad either for all of us.

The summer will go too fast for all of us, but it will surely be filled with wonderful times and great memories. Just make sure you take a break – roast some marshmallows, eat a little more and drink a little less.

And don’t forget the sunscreen!

  1. Yeah indeed! That’s the best part of being a student and it’s like a reward to them. Your oldest seems talented and to record for six volt is kind of something, anyway parents should really have a good strategy on handling the children in summer since we can’t really fully control them and to not let them use electronic gadgets is a very hard one.

  2. I find this article funny and I literally laugh many times because I can totally relate to the feelings of the parents but still I know parents will be also glad that they can then share more time with their children.

  3. That’s really crazy but still it fills with so much enjoyment that family can be together many hours in a week. Time management is really hard for this one but I still believe in all the parents that they can handle even in this hard situation.

  4. That’s crazy! But I know you would enjoy it playing with your kids also though a lot more harder in managing time will be given to you on that. Just take care what you like and do what you think is best for your kids.

  5. That is the best month or months of the students and I know that and I think all of us know that and most of us, we love that part of being a student. Student are getting stressed in school and spent most of their time in a year to go to school and so they really deserve to have a rest and a long rest for 1 month or 2 months and that will be okay for them.

  6. I totally agree with this one because I experienced this also when I was also a child and an elementary student. I remember when I was a child when I really love waiting for the vacation to come. It’s the most great feeling when you are a student and you have a good childhood if you are experiencing that one too.

  7. Every school child, teens and every one in schooling should read this. This is one great article after a school year of hard work and finally the time has come to rest all the “nerves” spent in the classrooms and study areas. One should enjoy the vacation even if how short it is. To spend with the time with family and acquaintances will sure be fun. Keep posting to inspire others. Thank you very much

  8. End of every school year and a vacation of it is really a piece of gold in every year for students since anyone wants to rest and wants to play due to the tiresome days of being a student for 10 months. Anyway that’s a bit hard also for parents since they then must make some plans over it and take time to guide their children.

  9. Wow! You’re a racer and a much of a race lover and your son is recording an album “My oldest, Granger, is recording his next album for SIX VOLT and has been chosen to play in the top Lacrosse league in the North East for thesummer”, I know it’s odd that you love things though not in common but still I find it interesting. I think your son will going to be a good singer and I think he does not have a financing problem because he have you his father.

  10. Ha ha ha This is not funny “‘oh my, now what do we do with them’?”, but it’s really true and parents will totally can relate to this. Time is the most important with this one and if you don’t have much time then you have no choice, extend and give time for them. I think parents should do that for once in a while, it’s not always but you have to.

  11. This is so true “The summer will go too fast for all of us, but it will surely be filled with wonderful times and great memories”, time goes by faster when the time is a vacation and a school break. I really can relate to it because we have a 2 months summer vacation but it’s just like it’s just 2 weeks and it is not enough and never will be enough since we students really have hard time on school.

  12. Vacations, is my favorite year..hahaha No more school, no more hassle, no more bullying. Honestly I really don’t want to go to school, but my parents always insisting that education is the key to success. blah blah whatever! They have no idea what are my bad experience in our school. I hate those students and teachers who always looks me down. Well in fact they look life the ugliest monkey in the world! I hope vacation will not end forever!

  13. When I read the title “HEY MOM & DAD: SCHOOL’S OUT!”, there is no doubt that you are talking about the kids on their vacation, wow! I mean for parents that are very busy it’s totally some sort of a hard time I guess because you have to take extra energy to use for your children and also not to mention that you are so busy with your job.

  14. Lol! This is funny but so true “For parents these can be the four scariest words of the year, because they are followed with – ‘oh my, now what do we do with them’?”, That is so scary literally since you don’t have much time for it and you have to adjust more time and make a good time for everything so that you can budget your time properly.

  15. Ha ha ha very funny! I think everyone should really something with that. I guess it depends on parents what will they do, for me I think I will just maybe make some trips sometimes with my children or maybe have a picnic together or watch a movie together. It is fun sometimes going on things that will really put you to challenge.

  16. Ha ha ha ha LOL looks fun “But wait, that statement is real, ‘oh my, now what do we do with them’? “Them” being the 4 kids in my household, or the 2, 3 or 4 looking at you right now in yours. “, I think it is really fun to have that kind of family. You have a good business a good work and a good family, you are really a blessed man.

  17. I’m glad that this is the last part of your article “The summer will go too fast for all of us, but it will surely be filled with wonderful times and great memories. Just make sure you take a break”, memories are just really gold for us here in our world. Time can’t be taken back if it passed and that’s why memories should always be made and of course that must be good memories.

  18. This is kind of sad but at the same time it’s good also “My wife leaves for a month to see her folks and family back on the West coast and I will miss them terribly, it’s good to let your wife do that and do what she wants. You are a good father and a loving husband and I can see here that it is really it is. I am enjoying my stay here and thanks for it.

  19. You know it’s hard to take care of kids when you have lots of things to do just like working in a company or in an office and everybody really know that. I can understand about that and I think I want to comment that a good preparation is what you really need before the prior time which the kids will have their starting day of vacation because you can really expect what really will happen after that.

  20. Numerous studies have found that vacations can help you stay healthier by reducing stress. According to Dr. Mel Borins, author of Go Away Just for the Health of It, a vacation of as little as a day or two can help reduce your blood pressure and levels of the stress hormone epinephrine. Taking time off may even help you live longer. A Travel Industry Association report titled The Benefits of Travel – 2008 notes “An annual vacation can cut a person’s risk of heart attack by 50 percent.”

  21. I believe that summer vacations are nice to spend with families. Whether it’s keeping fractious toddlers busy or impressing hard-to-please teens. I love summer days, no school, no paper works, and no hassle, free from everything. I miss the time when we go to the beach with my families, haha miss the old days! But wait this month is february it means 2 months to go before summer.

  22. It’s summer now and I want to go to some places that I really want to visit like going to my grandma’s house and also visit some of my old friends and watching some movies that I like. I want a good and happy summer and I hope also my summer will not go too fast for all of us and I hopt it will be filled with wonderful times and great memories, thanks for the post.

  23. I can see here that you have a good family and really talented kids. I think your kids will really have enjoyable and fun vacation every long vacation since you are very supportive to them including your wife. I have seen you as a good businessman and I am now encourage and inspired that you are also a good person and a good father and a good wife. Anyway having kids out of their vacation is too much to handle but I think you can.

  24. I like summer but I get disappointed also with this reason “The summer will go too fast for all of us, but it will surely be filled with wonderful times and great memories”, I hope this summer on this year will be filled with so much fun with your children. Every children in the world deserve to have a good, enjoyable and full of fun summer because summer is the only time when they can be a kid at their best.

  25. In my place today is a summer and it is really a big coincident to read such article about school’s out. I remember when I was a child and having my school break every April and May and it was really the best months for me because it’s a vacation and kids and children loves vacation and even adults just like me now I still love having long vacation. We really want to rest and rest and rest and not just rest but also relax and have an enjoyable and fun moments and activities.

  26. This is really right “Seriously, summer is a great time of year to plan a great family vacation or just carve out some quality time with your kids”, I have experience summer this last two months and it was really fun and enjoyable but somehow I have to face the start of the new class in this school year and on Monday will be the first day of some classes on some schools in my country and it’s too soon for me.
